The Los Angeles Times ran the following quote in regards to Pentagon plans for a 'Space bomber' (Weapon-carrying suborbital vehicle):
Pentagon officials insist such a spacecraft would not mark a further move to militarize space because its targets would be on Earth and it would not make a full orbit of the planet.
In a follow-up, a military spokesman said the placement of a machine-gun nest in Mrs. Hathawy's kindergarten classroom did not represent an attempt to militarize P.S. 45 in the Bronx because the gun's targets were outside school grounds, and the gunners would not receive certificates of attendance or little gold stars for learning songs.
