| The U.S.-built Stinger is available for $50,000-80,000. It also can reach 14,000 ft. Although the batteries needed to aim and fire the weapons are now thought to be useless, replacing them is not considered impossible. Stingers also were sold to Pakistan, Angola's Unita units, Chad and Nicaragua's Contras. |

A Pentagon spokesman noted that he was unable to comment on the irony of U.S. Forces being threatened by U.S.-supplied equipment, because "our irony officer is out today, having misunderstood when his mechanic told him that driving with an empty oil pan is a fine idea." He went on to explain that despite the current stinger problem the U.S. was moving ahead with other controversial arms sales, including the sale of a Death Ray to Guatemala, the blueprints for a space based laser to the Manchester United Football team, and two completely functional cybernetic androids with heavy weapons and infiltration capability to the AMWAY corporation. |
