Israeli Held Meetings With U.S. Analyst
Senior Israeli Diplomat Held Meetings With Pentagon Official

The Associated Press

JERUSALEM Aug. 30, 2004 — A senior Israeli diplomat in Washington has met with a Pentagon analyst being investigated by the FBI on suspicion he passed classified information to Israel, Israeli officials confirmed Monday.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the meetings were well within the norm of diplomacy and that no laws were broken. Israel has flatly denied it has a spy at the Pentagon.
The Israeli diplomat was identified as Naor Gilon, head of the political department at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, and a specialist on Iran's nuclear weapons program.
U.S. officials say the FBI investigation focuses on Lawrence A. Franklin, an analyst of Iranian affairs who works in a Pentagon policy office headed by Douglas J. Feith, the undersecretary for policy.

FAQ on the investigation:

Q.  Where does the investigation go from here?

A.  Nowhere.  It’s done.

Q.  What do you mean?

A.  We’ve identified a suspect, leaked his name to the press, and now embarrassing details are starting to come out.  What else would we do?

Q.  Umm… look for evidence that could be used in court?

A.  Not necessary.  We know he’s guilty.

Q.  How do you know?

A.  We saw it in the press.

Q.  But they’re just reporting your own leak!

A.  So?  The important thing is, the guy is probably guilty, because we heard a rumor that he was.  If he weren’t an American citizen he’d be in Gitmo by now.

Q.  This is like the case of Richard Jewel, the guy the media was sure was the Olympic Park bomber because of FBI leaks.

A.  Exactly!  Boy, was he guilty or what?

Q.  Ummm…. No.

A.  You sure?  We saw him on 20/20, or maybe 48 hours, and it sure sounded like he was guilty.  Plus, he was an obvious suspect, and we all know that obvious suspects are always guilty.

Q.  You just don’t care any more, do you?

A.  Guilty as charged!
