| National Security Advisor Condoleeza Rice testified before the Independent 9/11 Commission today. Her testimony was crafted to portray the Bush administration as having done as much as could have been done before 9/11 to avert a threat that nobody could have predicted. Excerpts follow: Rice: The outgoing Clinton administration claimed they had a plan to deal with this, and Sandt Berger says he briefed me on it, but frankly I couldn't understand him. His words were drowned out by this rhythmic pounding noise, sounded like some kind of furniture, maybe a wardrobe, or a china cabinet, or headboard, repeatedly hitting the wall… the noise was deafening. …The premise that the administration was fixated on an outdated great-power paradigm is simply not true. Sure, I was trained in Soviet Studies, and Cheney and Rumsfeld grew up in a bipolar world, but it's simply not true that people were unable to shift their world view. The fact that Rumsfeld keeps referring to Fallujah as "Khe Sanh" is nothing more than a speech impediment. Are you mocking an old man because he misspeaks? My God, Congress is going to be livid when they hear you're dissing both the Americans with Disabilities Act and the AARP….shame on you. Shame, shame. …Look, our resources were strained to the limit. We were spending billions on our missile defense program… thank God we had that one, huh? OK, we didn't actually have it, but we did spend lots of money on it, which is what counts, right?... ..Did I mention that I was born a poor black child? OK, not poor, but black, very black. In Birmingham…Alabama? You've heard of it? Did I mention I knew one of those little girls lost in the church bombing? So don't give me any crap about not grieving for victims, OK? I'm covered on that. …Hey, I just noticed none of you are black- isn't that funny? White boy, white boy, white boy…. And one white girl. Yeah, y'all can see right into the heart of the Arab mind, I bet…. …Clarke? Richard Clarke? I'm not here to dump on him. He's a good man, a hard worker, and we were lucky to have him. I certainly don't blame him for what happened… a lot of people started huffing paint fumes after 9/11… he'd have been fine if he hadn't mixed that with the horse tranquilizers…. ...I'm not aware of any information from the intelligence community that predicted the kind of attacks that we experienced on 9/11. OK, there was that Tom Clancy book, but for one thing, that was a Japanese guy, not an Arab. Also, I was provost of Stanford, for God's sake. You think I'd be caught dead reading that kind of tripe? Cheney, maybe - he's just a glorified hick, anyway. The president? Waaaay above his reading level. Too many big words. Remember, Kids, the part in bold is actual 100% news-flavored media product. The rest is the fakey part. Home Previous Lines of the Day |
