Rose's assertions disputed by bet runners

JOE KAY, AP Sports Writer
(01-06) 17:13 PST CINCINNATI (AP) --
Pete Rose's contention that he never bet on Cincinnati Reds games from the clubhouse is being disputed by two of his reputed bet runners.
Former housemate Tommy Gioiosa said Tuesday that Rose is lying when he says in his latest autobiography that he never placed a bet from his office. Gioiosa said he did so routinely.
Paul Janszen, who also told authorities that he ran bets for Rose, also said that baseball's hits king placed wagers from his office on a regular basis.

Another source contradicted Rose's story that he "never bet on traffic accidents or Leukemia patient outcomes."  Slick Sandy McGee, a former associate of Rose's, reports that he would routinely phone in reports from the Cincinnati-area emergency rooms on the state of incoming patients, with Rose telling him which outcomes to bet on.  Nonetheless, Rose insists he "never bet on a patient to die, and whatever you may have head, I never unplugged anybody's life support machinery or tied a knot in their IV lines."

In a related story, Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has finally admitted to betting on the outcome of the Vietnam War.  Rumors have swirled around Washington for years that Kissinger both literally and figuratively handicapped the results of peace discussions in 1968, leading to a South Vietnamese pullout from the talks and, some believe, ensuring Nixon's elections.  "I never bet on us losing the war," Kissinger is reported to have said in an upcoming book, "just on the talks collapsing.  Besides, everybody was doing it. King Carl Gustav made a killing in '71 when he picked the Trifecta of Nobel Prize Winners, and the Pope always seemed to know who's going to be canonized next.  And I never bet more than I could afford to lose.  Four more years of war didn't endanger my mortgage or my wooing of Hollywood starlets, so where's the harm?"

Kissinger, currently serving a lifetime suspension from the Credibility Hall of Fame, is reported to be eager to cap his career with election to the Hall, but Curator Christopher Hitchens is reluctant.  "Does my body look cold and dead to you?  No?  Then he's not getting in, is he?" replied the angry Brit.
